Click here to REGISTER for the I-News Investigative Journalism Institute. Deadline June 15.
The I-News Investigative Journalism Institute gives high school students an opportunity to spend the week of July 15-19 at the University of Colorado at Boulder learning how to think, question, and dig for the truth like an investigative reporter. Take your research, reporting and storytelling to a new level with instruction and guidance from the award-winning journalists of The I-News Network.
Selected applicants will get the chance to be an investigative journalist for a week. Each will experience how to investigate and produce multimedia reports with guidance from some of the best in the business. The deadline for applying is June 15, 2013.
The skills that top investigative reporters use to spot wrongdoing and uncover hidden information are valuable in any profession. And for students, they’re valuable immediately – not only for better student journalism, but for better term papers, reports and college applications, too.
Selected students will learn how to find hidden information, use critical thinking to spot holes in stories, work as a team, analyze data, document facts, and produce a compelling multimedia report.
Faculty will include:
Laura Frank, I-News executive director, has won top honors in both print and broadcast, producing stories that changed laws and lives. She also was a journalism trainer for Gannett, the largest newspaper company in the country.
Burt Hubbard, I-News editorial director, is well-known in the journalism world for his data analysis skills. He’s taught digital research and analysis to graduate students at the University of Colorado for more than a decade.
Jim Trotter is highly regarded in Colorado journalism and beyond. He was the senior editor for investigative and enterprise journalism at the Rocky Mountain News when it closed in 2009. Since then, he has been with the Associated Press, responsible for enterprise journalism in 13 western states.
Jim has edited Pulitzer Prize-winning articles and an Emmy-winning documentary. He has been a columnist at a major metropolitan newspaper and been editorial director for the public affairs show of a major metropolitan television station.
Joe Mahoney, I-News multimedia director, has won two Pulitzers as a newspaper photographer and an Emmy for multimedia journalism. He has led training sessions for journalists, the government agencies and the public.
